Democracy Defense Project Statement on Need for Timely and Accurate Election Results in California

WASHINGTON – Mike DuHaime of the Democracy Defense Project issued the following statement regarding the status of California’s ballot counting in the June 2 primary:

“Conducting elections with integrity and ensuring that every eligible vote is counted are fundamental to maintaining public confidence in our democracy. At the same time, prolonged delays in ballot tabulation, such as those that have become increasingly common in California, can undermine public trust and create unnecessary uncertainty around election outcomes.

The longer election results remain unresolved, the greater the opportunity for misinformation and speculation to spread online, eroding confidence in our electoral process. Accuracy must always remain the highest priority, but accuracy and timeliness are not mutually exclusive. Voters should be able to trust that election officials can deliver both.

This November, control of the U.S. House of Representatives could hinge on a handful of closely contested races in California. The Democracy Defense Project urges California election administrators to continue pursuing every opportunity to expedite ballot processing and tabulation while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and security.”
