Democracy Defense Project Arizona Board Statement on Local Control of Election Administration

ARIZONA – Democracy Defense Project Arizona board members Governor Jan Brewer, Congressman Matt Salmon, former State Rep. Daniel Hernandez and Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s new election related executive order calling on the Department of Homeland Security, alongside the Social Security Administration, to create a nationwide list of verified eligible voters:

“There are times when we are reminded that good intentions are not enough—what ultimately matters is what works and what respects the balance our Constitution established. The latest executive order out of Washington falls short on both counts. It is not workable, not necessary, and it risks upsetting a system that has long delivered results.

“In Arizona, we believe in federalism and local control because it works. While the Constitution rightly places the responsibility for administering elections with the states, the reality is that elections are carried out at the most fundamental level by our counties—by local officials who know their communities, understand their voters, and are directly accountable to the people they serve.

“And they have delivered.

“For decades, Arizona has maintained a proven track record of secure, accurate, and transparent elections. We have successfully implemented mail voting since 1991 and voter ID requirements since 1996—systems built, refined, and trusted at the local level. Our counties are not only capable of administering elections; they are the very backbone of that success.

“That is why proposals for a centralized, federally managed voter system and new nationwide mandates give us pause. Not because we oppose progress, but because we recognize that federal overreach into state and county election administration often creates unnecessary administrative hurdles and logistical complications rather than solving real problems.

“The strength of our system lies in its proximity to the people. Here in Arizona, we trust our county election officials to continue safeguarding election integrity—something they have consistently done far more effectively than any distant federal bureaucracy could replicate.”
